Bart G. Carlson

Bertil (Bart) G. Carlson, 87, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away November 27, 2020, at MorningStar Senior Living.

Bart was born June 21, 1933, in Jamestown, New York, to Gustav Henning Carlson and Emmy Johansson Carlson, on a beautiful first day of summer. Bart was the second son of four boys.

He spent many enjoyable hours when school was out on family trips and picnics to Lake Erie and Allegany State Park. He would hike and especially liked riding his bike to the lake with his friends and going swimming almost every day.

He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1950. His first summer out of high school was spent working on a railroad section gang, followed by grocery stores and the other jobs common to this age group. The Korean War started in June of 1950, and Bart was drafted in the spring of 1953.

The war ended in the summer of 1953, but Bart ended up in Germany for a year and a half. This provided him a chance to go to Sweden and meet his grandparents and family and to see Germany and Austria.

Upon returning to the United States, he attended college in Buffalo, New York. When he graduated, he and some friends went west to hunt deer and antelope in the fall. Bart was never the same after that hunt and he knew he had to go west. He found work at NRTS in Idaho Falls. His wife-to-be had just recently moved from the Idaho Falls Security office to the one at the site. Bart met her the first day he signed up to start his new job. Bart and the love of his life were married a year later on February 17, 1961, in Ashton, Idaho, and made their home in Idaho Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Carlson of Idaho Falls; their four children, Heidi (Myron) Harris of Roberts, ID, Stuart (Hiroko) Carlson of San Tan, AZ, Valerie (Thomas) Smith of Meridian, ID, and Nikki Marcovitz of Idaho Falls. Bart leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. What an enjoyment his children and grandchildren were to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers. Excluding his family here, the rest of his family lives in Sweden.

A family gathering will be held at a later time.
