Baden Eugene Burt

Baden Eugene Burt, 71, of Idaho Falls, passed away August 24, 2026, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Baden was born December 26, 1954, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada, to Reginald James Burt and Joyce Frances Burt. He was the second eldest child among his siblings (Ivan, Kent, Rosalind, Earl, and Judy). He grew up in Corner Brook and attended Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He met his wife, Sharon “Joy” (nee: Hoddinott) Burt in Corner Brook where they married on June 7, 1975.

While studying chartered accountancy, he and Joy began their life together, starting a family in Nova Scotia, Canada. They had two children (Chad Eugene Burt and Melissa Andrea Burt). They later moved to Prince Edward Island, Canada, where relatives and friends remember spending summers. Baden always made sure the kids had a drive somewhere fun, and guests had something delicious to eat. He was a kind and generous father who spent many hours during his evenings and weekends making sure his children had a drive to their after-school activities. It was important to Baden and Joy that their children had the financial and emotional freedom to pursue whatever career path they chose. Chad went on to achieve his Master’s in fine arts, and Melissa, her Doctorate in neuroscience.

After their children had grown, Baden and Joy embarked on another adventure and made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 2008, where Baden worked as a VP of Finance for Idaho Pacific Holdings. He was a dedicated and loyal employee who took pride in his work. He enjoyed going to lunch with his colleagues and came alive discussing a spread sheet. Throughout his career, he emphasized the importance of not just seeing the numbers, but the people. He also loved the freedom of the road, enjoying the mountain views in his beloved convertible BMW. He and Joy would enjoy many road trips across America and spending time in their beautiful backyard.

Baden was open with his emotions and generous in spirit. He was a natural storyteller who enjoyed a long conversation with friends and family. He also had a mischievous nature. After more than five decades of marriage, he could still make a joke that earned an “Oh, Baden” from Joy. He made sure his nieces and nephews had the freedom to have a bit of fun. His sense of humour was woven through his life, often bringing lightness to even the most difficult of times. Though in his later years, Baden experienced increasing disability that impeded many of the activities he had enjoyed, he rarely complained and kept his sense of humour to the last of his days. Those who remember him, will remember his stories, jokes, openness, giving heart, and most of all, his love. Taking a line from one of his favourite singers and poets, Leonard Cohen, “There is a crack in everything, that is how the light gets in.” Baden did his best to always find and allow in the light.

Baden is survived by his wife, Joy Burt in Idaho Falls; his son, Chad Burt (Tara MacDonald) and grandchild, Lucas Burt, in Alberta, Canada; and his daughter, Melissa Burt (Jan-Michel Chartrand) in Quebec, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reginald and Joyce Burt, and father in-law, Pleman Hoddinott.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Canada. It was Baden’s wish that research continue to help improve the lives of patients with muscular dystrophy (FSHD). As such, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the FSHD Society or FSHD Canada Foundation.
