Arthur Peeler

Click Here To View Memorial Video On Thursday, May 15, 2014, Arthur "Art" Peeler, 95, passed away at home, surrounded by his four children. He was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Lamar County, Alabama, the third son and fifth of six children born to William Lester and Newtie Cunningham Peeler. At the age of three, Art and his family emigrated to Idaho. He spent his youth in Idaho Falls and later in Shelley where the family farmed for many years. He was a graduate of Shelley High School in the Class of 1937. On May 16, 1942, Art married Beulah Irick in Idaho Falls, and together they raised their four children: Tanna (John) Hatfield of Gooding, Idaho, Sue Ann Aleo of Tillson, of New York, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, William "Bill" (Evelyn) Peeler of Levan, Utah and Alice (Mark) Kemball, of Portland, Oregon. Art and Beulah made their home first in Shelley, then for a short time in Blackfoot, and for the last 60 years, in Idaho Falls. For fifty-eight of those years, Art lived in the house that he & Beulah built. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, in 1993, his parents and five siblings, a great-grandson, and his "special friend", Mary Monnie, in 2008. After they left the farm, Art was a self-employed truck driver until he started what would become his "favorite job"; bus driver for the "Site", a career he enjoyed for 26 years. Art was a member of The Amalgamated Transit Union for over 50 years and the Million Mile Club of the National Safety Council. He received an award for 26 years of accident-free driving. Art had a fondness for horses and he taught himself to ski by skiing behind his horse in the pasture. Skiing was an interest he pursued well into his 70's, when he earned the privilege to ski for free at local resorts. He was an avid dancer. He loved ballroom dancing, square & round dancing, often driving long distances to jamborees and festivals around the West and Canada. He enjoyed reading, camping and traveling, and was active in the Idaho Falls and Shelley senior citizens centers. He shared these passions with his children who have many fond memories. Besides his four children, Art is survived by 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and long-time friends. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care which Art received from Hospice of Eastern Idaho and QualiCare, Inc. Home Health. If desired, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Eastern Idaho, the Idaho Falls Senior Citizens Center or the charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge). The family will visit with friends on Friday from 6:30-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the services, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
