ARTHUR GARLAND JR.
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Arthur Garland Jr, 86, of Idaho Falls since 1991, died March 29, 2008, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born February 24, 1922, to Arthur Garland Sr. and Annie Green Garland. He attended Amarillo High School and later graduated from Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas, in 1944, with a BS in Chemical Engineering. His first job was at Neches Butane Products Co. in Port Neches, Texas, in 1944. Neches Butane Products Co. made synthetic rubber to replace natural rubber, which was no longer available because of the Japanese occupation in WW II.
After moving to Beaumont, Texas, he met Betty Jean Hartan and they were married February 9, 1948, in Beaumont. He was elected as the first chairman for the newly organized Chemist Union of Port Neches, Texas, which was a very memorable part of his life. He changed jobs in 1964 to Jefferson Chemical Co., where he worked until retirement in 1983. He was an expert computer programmer at the time of his retirement.
He enjoyed music, opera and politics. He and his wife moved to Idaho Falls in 1991 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He wrote editorials for the Idaho Falls Post Register. He was active in the Democratic Party in Idaho Falls.
Survivors include his children, Erich W. (Jan) Garland, MD of Idaho Falls, and Rosalind Gillespie of Salt Lake City, a sister, Sylvia Foss of Spokane, WA, a brother, J. L. Garland of Santa Rosa, CA, and five grandchildren.
No public services are planned.

I worked with your Dad at Jefferson Chemical (Texaco Chemical) and we corresponded by e-mail and phone regularly until his final illness. Art probably kept you up to date on his retirement benefits but if I can be of assistance e-mail me at pjhoney@gt.rr.com

I send my sincere condolences to the Art's family. I only think I have known Erich and Rosalind and that was many years ago when I worked for Art at Jefferson Chemical Co. Art and I worked together many years and I admired his computer expertise very much.
God bless you all,
Al Peterson
