Arlo Jay Moffat died on December 2, 2016, due to complications of old age. He was born in Teton Valley on May 11, 1930, to Rebecca Mickelsen and Andrew Moffat. He was born on Mother’s Day which he celebrated as a gift to his mother. He was raised in Teton Valley, graduated from Teton High School, received a BS in chemistry from Idaho State and a PhD in physical chemistry from Purdue University. His service in the army (1953 to 1955) was mostly in Germany. He married the love of his life, Nona Mennear, in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 31, 1955. They are the parents of five children; Jeffrey (Rebecca), Bruce (Rebecca), Michelle Nielson (Lars), Launa Downs (David), and Regina Moffat; the grandparents of 22 children and the great grandparents of 24 children. Arlo and Nona served together in a variety of positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including: Oklahoma regional dance directors, Idaho Falls Temple officiators, missionaries in England, Temple missionaries in the Washington DC Temple, and stake parenting specialists in LDS Social Services. Arlo also served in the bishopric in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, as Bishop in Victor, Idaho, high councilor, Sunday school teacher, and mission financial secretary, to name a few. In his professional life, he was a research scientist at Phillips Petroleum, an assistant instructor at Purdue, a substitute high school teacher, an instructor of chem lab technicians, and a math and science tutor for high school students. He had a passion for learning and teaching and enjoyed tutoring high school students. His research was in the areas of catalysis and mechanisms, diffusion in porous media, coal and coke combustion and gasification. Arlo and Nona lived in Oklahoma for about 27 years where they raised their five children. After retirement, Arlo and Nona eventually moved back to Teton Valley in 1986, and in 1998 they moved to their current residence in Idaho Falls. Arlo was a little bit of a pest, poet, humorist, and philosopher during his life on earth. Here is some good advice which he leaves to his family and friends: "Feast on the words of Christ. They tell us what to do. With prayer and the Holy Spirit to safely guide us through." Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the Cedar Ridge Ward (3195 S. Holmes in Idaho Falls). There will be a viewing on Saturday 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Cache Clawson Cemetery.
