ALVA J. POWELL
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Alva John Powell, 86, of Idaho Falls, formerly of Coffeyville, Kansas, died November 8, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Alva John Powell was born September 8, 1916, in Iola, Kansas, to Thomas and Jemima (Bauman) Powell. He attended public schools in Iola and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1939. Upon graduation, he worked for the Lawrence Journal World in the news department.
In March of 1942, he entered the armed forces, where he served in the Operations and Intelligence Division of the Army Air Force. He was discharged in December, 1945, and returned to the news department, for the Coffeyville Daily Journal.
He married Norroena Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Wood of Coffeyville, on July 18, 1943. She preceded him in death December 20, 2001.
In 1948 he began a career in real estate and the Powell Realty Company was formed. He retired in October, 1994. He has served as President of the Coffeyville Board of Realtors, President of the Kansas Association of Realtors, and President of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce. In 1956 he was appointed to the Educational Speaking Staff of the National Association of Realtors and served on the Board of Directors for three years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Coffeyville, where he served as Trustee and Deacon. He was also a 50-year member of the American Legion.
Survivors include:Daughter: Lorenda Faler and a grandson, Brad Faler, both of Idaho Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Norroena, and a brother, Elmer.
Graveside Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2002, at Fielding Memorial Park with Reverend Dr. Dennis Falasco of the Idaho Falls First Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will visit with friends for one hour prior to the services at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials to a favorite charity or the First Christian Church of Coffeyville.
