PHIPPEN IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Althera B. “Altha” Kinghorn Phippen, 89, of Idaho Falls, died December 29, 2002, at her home of natural causes. She was under the care of Hospice of Eastern Idaho. She was born December 23, 1913, at Rigby, to Arthur Thomas Kinghorn and Mary Ferrin Ballantyne Kinghorn. She grew up in Rigby and attended schools there, graduating from Rigby High School. She married Merlyn Lester Phippen April 11, 1934, at Rexburg. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on February 18, 1978. She was a homemaker and mother and had worked when she was younger as a clerk at the I.D. Store and Sprouse Reitz Department Stores and at Roger Brothers Seed Company. Her husband passed away July 2, 1984. An active member of The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in the Primary, Young Women, Relief Society, in the Ward Choir, as Ward Chorister, and as a Den Mother. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at both Riverview Hospital and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. She enjoyed camping at their lot in Island Park and walked five miles a day while in her late 70's. Surviving are:Son: Dr. Jay W. [Virginia] Kinghorn, RigbySister: Mary Lou [Deloss] Nelson, Pipestone, MN 15 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great Great Grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Clyde Kinghorn and Dale Kinghorn, and a grandson, James Wesley Phippen. Funeral Services will be at 12 Noon Friday, January 3, 2003, at the Idaho Falls LDS Woodruff 2nd Ward, 1660 – 12th Street, with Bishop Odell Young officiating. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge) and for one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park under the direction of Wood Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of Eastern Idaho, 1920 East 17th Street, Idaho Falls, ID 83404.
