Alta was born December 18, 1924, in Idaho Falls, to Joseph Prichard Rhoades and Della Labrum Rhoades. She grew up in Idaho Falls, where she attended local schools and graduated from Idaho Falls, High School. Alta married Louis S. Cannon of Shelley on September 21, 1943, in Jackson, Wyoming. Their marriage was solemnized July 6, 1960, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Alta enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, being in the mountains, and being close to God's creations. She was extremely talented with a needle and thread, and made many beautiful items, especially intricate lace doilies and candlewick pillows, which she took to numerous craft fairs. People were eager to buy her exquisite needlework. Alta worked for many years with her brother, Keith Collins, at Highland Greenhouse and Garden Shop; later she worked at Farrell's Department Store in downtown Idaho Falls. Alta was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many ward and stake callings. She especially enjoyed attending the Idaho Falls Temple with Louis. Alta enjoyed traveling. Her father worked for Union Pacific Railroad and she and her family would travel by train to Salt Lake City and southern California to visit her sister, Josephine. After she and Louis retired, they spent 12 winters in Arizona, soaking up the warm winter sunshine and making many trips to the discount stores, as well as taking frequent trips to Mexico. Alta and Louis are the proud parents of Frances (Ronald) Sessions, and Steve (Mary Alice) Cannon. Few people enjoyed being Grandma more than Alta, who has eight grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Her husband, children, and grandchildren survive her. Survivors include: Husband: Louis Cannon, Idaho Falls Daughter: Frances (Ronald) Sessions, Idaho Falls Son: Steve (Mary Alice) Cannon, Idaho Falls Sister: Josephine Davis, AZ Brother: Ronald Rhoades, WY She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lenora. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2008, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 North Ridge Ave., in Idaho Falls. Family will visit with friends Sunday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Monday for one hour prior to the services, both at Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ucon Cemetery. ----------------------------------------- Condolences received online: Christina (Collins) Pay cpay60@gmail.com I am so sorry to hear of Aunt Alta's death. I know there is a joyous reunion in Heaven today as she is reunited with her father, both mothers, and her sister! Aunt Alta was always so kind and thoughtful to me. As a child she made Barbie clothes and bedding for my Barbie bed; while in college at Ricks, she and Uncle Louis were my salvation when school got to be too much. They'd bring me down for a weekend with them and we'd go on car rides, and other adventures. I remember helping Aunt Alta freeze corn one summer while I attended summer school at Ricks. I don't know how well I did at freezing the corn because it was good I kept eating it! Visiting the Cannon home was never an imposition, but one where we were always welcomed with open arms. Even after marrying and with children of my own, it was a given if we stopped in for a visit we couldn't leave without being well fed or given food to take with us. My children still remember the Oreo cookies and jug of milk Aunt Alta sent home with us. They also fondly remember Aunt Alta and Uncle Louis driving down to Utah from Idaho Falls just to deliver the beautiful doll house they had made for my daughters and then turn around and headed back home. The sweetest memory I have of Aunt Alta is the tender love, care and patience with which she and Uncle Louis treated my Grandma Rhoades during Grandma's final years. Never have I witnessed a daughter who showed such love and devotion. Grandma may have been a step-mother but there was never any differentiation shown in the family. We were all loved and treated equally by our grandparents and Aunt Alta carried this on through deed and example. I knew I was always a loved and accepted member of this special family. My heart and prayers go out to Uncle Louis, Steve and Frances. I know your hearts are grieving the loss, but are rejoicing at the knowledge that Aunt Alta is home again. I am trying to make arrangements to be there on Monday. In any event please know of my love and condolences. Love, Christina Cindy White Rivers riversric@hotmail.com I remember going to your family's home with my dad and mom.I always thought that all of you were so fun to be around. It is still so good to see you. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
