ALAN G. STEPHENS
IDAHO FALLS, ID -- Alan Gardiner Stephens of Idaho Falls,
died September 11, 2004. He was born April 22, 1935, in Binghamton, New
York, to Harry B. and Margaret Gardiner Stephens. He graduated from North
High School in 1953, where he was captain of the football team, four-time
city track champion, president of the school, and president of the National
Honor Society. He received a full-ride scholarship to play football at
Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1957, he graduated from
Lafayette College with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. Declining an offer
to play in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts, he instead focused on his
engineering career, which began at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh.
He subsequently returned to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
in Troy, New York, and graduated with an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering.
In 1971 he received a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in Nuclear
Engineering.
He relocated to Idaho Falls in 1975, where, with his
family, he became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He began
his professional life in Idaho at ARA3 and Semiscale and was a member
of the Idaho Section of the American Nuclear Society. In 1985 he left
the site to begin a teaching career at Idaho State University. He was
subsequently director of the graduate nuclear engineering program and
retired as Professor Emeritus.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Stephens; four children,
David Scott Stephens of Whitefish, Montana, Andrea (David) Stephens McEvoy
of Missoula, Montana, Holly (Coby) Stephens Hanes of Prineville, Oregon,
and Christian (Lisa) Scott Stephens of Lake Oswego, Oregon; eight grandchildren,
Drew Stephens of Carmel, California, Anna and Maria McEvoy of Missoula,
Montana, Garrison, Isabella, Abigail and Trieste Stephens, all of Lake
Oswego, Oregon, and Cole Hanes of Prineville, Oregon. He is also survived
by his sister, Rae (Richard) DeVoe of Windsor, New York; two nieces and
three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister,
Joyce (Lou) Hurlbut.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September
15, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 237 North Water, Idaho Falls,
with Reverend Thom Larson presiding.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
at Wood Funeral Home (273 N. Ridge) and one hour prior to the services
at the church. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
