Adolf Silvano Garcia, 75, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on March 9, 2015, at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born May 4, 1939, in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Adolf was the son of Santiago and Maria Garcia, both of Havana, Cuba.
Adolf emigrated to the United States in 1958 from Cuba. In 1963 he earned his Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from Louisiana State University and moved to Idaho Falls in 1975 to work for Argonne National Laboratory. Everything about southeast Idaho suited Adolf, and it became his home for the rest of his life.
We will miss his kind soul, gentle spirit, and unique sense of humor. He touched the lives of everyone he met, surprising people with his optimism, hope, and laughter at the most unexpected times.
His absence will be deeply felt by his colleagues at the the Department of Energy where he contributed much to the field of Nuclear Criticality and Safety during his career. His service to the American Nuclear Society was considerable. He served as a longtime member of the program committee, program chair for a national meeting, and chair of the Criticality Safety Division. For decades he was chair of the key industry standards body on criticality safety (ANS-8.1). He was a longtime faculty member at the University of New Mexico short course on Criticality Safety. His focus there and elsewhere was respecting the past experience of nuclear pioneers and collaborating with other professions to enable the best outcomes. A true professional, who deeply respected his contemporaries, the support he gave to colleagues' personal lives will be remembered by many.
At the top of Adolf's many hobbies and interests were all things living (including, and in no particular order): friends, family, dogs, goldfish, saltwater fish, dolphins, parakeets, houseplants, fruit trees, evergreen trees, deciduous trees, and flowers (all varieties). He was also very skilled at ballroom dancing, a talented artist, and loved to travel especially to France, the UK, and to Hilton Head, South Carolina—his favorite annual summer trip.
Adolf is preceded in death by his parents Santiago and Maria Garcia, brother Santiago Garcia Lara, and brother Jesus Garcia Milo.
Adolf had an extended adopted family here in Idaho and will be remembered in love by many. His loss will be felt by those he considered almost as his own children: Brad and Joanna Anderson of Idaho Falls, ID, Greg and Natalie Hilker of Salt Lake City, UT, and Carter and Diana Wright of Boulder, CO.
Adolf's former spouse, Linda Anderson (Walker), and her children Michelle (Jim) and Michael, will miss him deeply.
All of the “grandchildren” will remember Adolf with love: Lexi, Mikki, Taelor, Berlin, Jessa, Jackson, Emily, Riley and Jordan.
They and others who knew him will find comfort knowing that Adolf's enduring faith in God brought him great peace and comfort.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the many caregivers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
