Adaruth Waddoups

Adaruth Mays Waddoups, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, July 27, 2018, at the age of 84. She was born February 4, 1934, in Arco, Idaho, to Ada Marie Swayze Mays and Harry Hudson Mays. She grew up on her family's farm near Howe, Idaho, with her brother, Jack, and sisters, Maxine and Peggy. She attended Catron and Howe grade schools. As there was no transportation available from her home to the nearest high school in Arco, she lived with her older sister, Maxine Dragnich, in Tacoma, Washington, and attended high school there for three years. She thought of Maxine as her second mother and the two remained very close throughout their lives. During her senior year the public schools in Arco started providing transportation from Howe, so Adaruth returned home and graduated with honors from Arco High School, class of 1952. The Monday after graduation she started working as a secretary for Westinghouse on the INL site and remained there for many years. In 1955 she married Don Allen Waddoups at the family home in Howe, Idaho, in a civil service officiated by Hazel Clendenning. The couple lived in Logan, Utah, for three years while Don attended Utah State University, then moved to Idaho Falls in 1958. They purchased a house on the west side of town, which they lived in together until the time of Adaruth's passing. Adaruth worked as the secretary at Temple View Elementary School for over twenty years. She was beloved by students and faculty alike. Decades after retiring from Temple View she was often greeted warmly by former students (now adults) with stories of how she'd put a band-aid on a skinned knee or called their mother when they were sick. Later in life, Adaruth enjoyed flower gardening, reading biographies and other non-fiction books, spending time with her family and attending cow cuttings with her husband. She developed very special bonds with her three great-grandchildren who lived nearby in Shelley, Idaho. She loved attending sporting events, school activities and getting together for holidays. Adaruth is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Jill Schaffer; son, Mark Waddoups; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
