Melva LaRee Nielson Johnson, 81, of Idaho Falls, passed away June 30, 2014, at Lily and Syringa Assisted Living. She was under the care of her family and Hands of Hope Hospice.

Melva was born on June 11, 1933 in Goshen, Idaho, the tenth of eleven children born to Oliver and Astrid Johannson Nielson. She attended school in Goshen, graduating from Firth High School in 1951.

She married Bill M. Johnson on September 25, 1958 in Shelley, Idaho and together they lived all their years in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Melva was a long-time employee of Chesbro Music Company where she worked for 30 years. Prior to her employment at Chesbro Music Company she worked for General Electric at the Idaho National Lab.

Music was always an important part of Melva’s life whether it be playing in her father’s band during her teenage years or playing the piano at home. She also loved to camp and fish with her family and in more recent years, enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Melva is survived by her husband, Bill Johnson; her two daughters, Pam L. Johnson of Annapolis, Maryland and Peg M. Johnson of Seattle, Washington; her three grandchildren, Derek L. (Shannon) Copeland of Dover, Delaware, Krissy L. Copeland of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Lindsey M. (Jay) Miller of Jacksonville, Florida; brothers, Carlos (Donna) Nielson of Shelley, Idaho and Marvin (Norma) Nielson of St. George, Utah; sister, Nancy Nielson of Idaho Falls, Idaho as well as two great granddaughters, Madison and Tori Copeland of Dover, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Laverne, Carl and Dennis Nielson and sisters Edla Schnell, Veniece Hess, Naomi Larson and Marilyn Hanson.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Goshen Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge, Idaho Falls.
